kabinshop blog — pastel pink stairs

    Painting pink stairs!

    Painting pink stairs!

This is not pottery related but i am so excited by my new pink stairs [ inspired by my obsession with stairways in Silverlake] that i thought i would share my DIY pink stair painting journey! [ I am not becoming a DIY/interiors/ blogging nerd as millions of people do it way better than me.]

So obviously i started on Pinterest collecting photos of rainbow stairs/ ombre stairs but settled on a pink pastel colour. Finding the perfect shade and finish of floor paint was quite difficult and i settled on Little Greene 'Pink slip' which is a kind of glossy satin.

So i began tearing up the worn out cream carpet and underlay so old it had turned to sand then pulled out all the nails and plywood strips of spikes ready to sand down all the old glue.

    Sanded wood stairs

Luckily the stairs were in pretty good condition as they have never been exposed.

Next i added 3 coats of white priming undercoat to the stairs and up the sides of the wood surround and then painted the wood at the sides with a few coats of wood paint.

Finally i am ready to go in with the pink and probably the most tedious bit of preparation [ but most important] was taping up the sides with decorating masking tape [ i bought mine in Azda .]

Ready to paint 3 coats of the pink floor paint. My stairs are quite small so i litre was enough with a bit left over for touch ups.

    TIPS:

    1. Wear gloves [ i didn't and my hands are a disaster.]

    2. If you think you might need to walk up the stairs paint ever other step until dry then paint the others.

    3. If you have pets vacuum between each each coat of paint. [ i found grey cat hairs landing everywhere!]

    4. Don't skimp of preparing with masking tape, as boring as it is.

    5. If you spill paint clean it up ASAP as its much harder to do it afterwards.

    6. Enjoy your new stairs and stick to bare feet at home to avoid chips!
