As a maker of handmade goods, and in fact as a seller of anything online, we are constantly squeezed for everything . Supplies get more and more expensive and customers expect to buy at a cheaper and cheaper price , not only the proliferation of cheap copies not just from the far east but equally from ''artists'' copying our work and undercutting.
Etsy's new advertising idea is the last straw in greed and control to its sellers, of which i am one, along with other platforms. They have announced that that they will be beginning a programme of advertising online whereby any sales made from an item or other items sold by a seller when a customer clicks on that item will be subject to an 18% fee as well as the usual transaction fees + VAT on both the item and the shipping charge for the next 30 days.
The problem is that sellers who have sold more than $10,000 worth in a 12 month period can not opt out of this as it is mandatory and can have no say in what is advertised either. This will be controlled by an algorithm which undoubtably will blast offline adverts for specific items that a customer has just viewed and already shown an interest in. This is basically a winning formula for Etsy.
I have never participated in any kind of advertising before and if i were to do so i would want to choose what is advertised, i strongly object to this control.
So. I can not sustain this amount of commission taken off my products without a large price increase on Etsy , or controversially i may cancel and refund orders on Etsy that are subject to these charges and send them to my website if they still wish to buy or ultimately i may decide to leave Etsy. When i started selling there it was a wonderful site encouraging handmade items, now it is just an unsupportive money making e-commerce site.
I would urge customers to not click and buy from Etsy adverts if you want to support the handmade community , even better just go straight to the sellers own website if they have one.
